CHAPTER 10

“And that,” Peter said an hour later once Kath and Dan had said their thank you’s and goodbyes and he was preparing to head off to collect Luke and bring him back from Thornbrook. He’d said that he’d like to save Jon Steadman a trip but Amy suspected that he wanted to make sure that he didn’t get caught up in anything nasty because she knew that her nephew-in-law wouldn’t turn a blind eye to anything. “Was very interesting wasn’t it? I gather that the pseudo-Christians packed up and went as soon as they realised that they weren’t going to get a reaction, or maybe their intended prey unhelpfully refused to show up?”

“We might get lucky and they’ll run into a pack of very hungry lions on their way home.” Amy said hopefully and naughtily as she remembered the old joke about a small boy saying that there was one poor lion that hadn’t got a Christian after he’d been shown a picture of early Christian martyrs being thrown to the lions.

“I couldn’t possibly comment about that. More to the point, what did you make of Kath and Dan? Are they innocents, potential recruits, or spies out to infiltrate?”

“You don’t think?” She was surprised into asking because she hadn’t considered the third option.

“No, I don’t think I do. Andie and Iona are both almost certainly in the third category but I haven’t worked out what their motives are yet, although I’m willing to bet that you saw one of the very rare occasions when they were prepared to be allies. We were also being watched by a fourth person while we ate who was far too professional to be any of Lucretia Marsden’s little acolytes. That’s why I warned Kath and Dan to be careful before they left. You don’t need to waste your time and breath telling me that they won’t take any notice because I’ve already worked it out all by myself, just as a lot of people seem to have worked out that we’re interested in whatever this turns out to be.”

“But why are we interested? And are they using Swansmere again?”

“You’d have to ask Camilla about that because she was even more evasive than usual when I asked her. Luke doesn’t know any more than I do, and that’s annoying him so much that I shall have to watch him even more carefully than usual. As far as I can work it out, it’s the usual people smuggling, probably with some drugs mixed in, which again is pretty much normal. There’s probably also a generous dose of the self-important who’ve made their money in dubious ways and are trying to run things to suit themselves because they’re convinced that rules are for little people rather than important people like them. Marsden is an interesting character because he was quite a senior Civil Servant who made some serious money after he claimed to have had good luck with share dealing. A fair few people might have
